ENGL 154 – LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT 1

Course Description:
The first of a series of three integrated language courses designed specifically for IT majors. Special attention is given to IT related vocabulary and the unique features of technical writing.
Course Objectives:
Reading:
By the end of the course students should be able to:
· identify topics and main ideas
· find specific information
· identify general and specific details
· make inferences
· understand pronoun references
· list details
· understand diagrams
· identify patterns of organization
· identify key words/search terms
· identify definition
· recognize paraphrases
· determine the meaning of words in context by using:
Ø parts of speech
Ø affixes
Ø appositives, synonyms and antonyms
Ø other context clues
· increase academic and IT related vocabulary
Writing:
By the end of the course students should be able to:
· write topic, support and concluding sentences
· expand text by adding details/examples
· organize ideas logically/coherently
· use appropriate connectors
· write expository paragraphs: description, comparison/contrast and process
· use appropriate tense and voice
· summarize a text in a paragraph
· use terms appropriately in written assignments
· prepare, format and submit formal written assignments
